Grandmothers: 1 year, 9 months agoMy husband’s job has recently had him away from home a lot – a couple weeks at a time. I have rediscovered what it is to be on your own, working, responsible for house and pets. Holy buckets batman! I’d forgotten my single mom days, but this brings it back. Those chores he usually does – take out the garbage, mow the lawn, walk and feed the dog,…[Read more]

Grandmothers: 1 year, 9 months agoMy neighborhood had a yard sale last weekend. My 4-year-old grandson decided to sell drinks because it was so hot. Well, it was hot. And he did have lemonade, water and sodas. But, I really think he did so well because he would turn those big, brown eyes on someone (mostly women) and they could not resist. I should have had him trying to sell my stuff.

Grandmothers: 1 year, 10 months agoMy grandsons love, love, love swimming in a pool. Neither actually ”swims” yet and they have not had swimming lessons. Any tips out there for teaching a 4 year old and a 2 year old how to swim? There is a community pool in my neighborhood and the boys come often.

My daughter takes pre-school swim classes at Shepherd U. They are a 1/2 hour long & parents are not required to get in the pool b/c there are two teachers (& of course, life guards) & the kids are equipped with floaties strapped to their back . Those lessons, plus working with the “noodles” in the pool are definitely helping her learn the…[Read more]

Thanks Caitlin. My oldest grandson uses one of the floaties strapped to his back too. He loves it and does some weird form of walking/dog paddling with it. The process looks exhausting (his legs and arms are moving like crazy) and progress is slow, but he gets around.

The YMCA also has swim classes for all ages. Last summer, I bought my (then) 3-year-old a life vest that attached to his swim trunks… that helped him with his confidence. Thankfully, he has a healthy apprehension of the water and does not go jumping in
He spends time on the steps and slowly works his way down. We also use floater rings and…[Read more] -
It’s amazing how much a child changes in the blink of an eye. The boys came over to swim this weekend. The 4-year-old had learned to hold his breath under water the DAY BEFORE. He wore the floatie, stuck his head in the water and took off. He doesn’t get very far but there is definite progress.

Grandmothers: 1 year, 11 months agoThe ”boys” spent the day with me on Saturday. We went to the store and Chase, 4, said we should look at toys. I asked him if he brought money. He said he’d left his money at home. There was a brief pause and then he said, ”We could use your money.”
He was right, we could. -

Grandmothers: 2 years agoWhen my oldest grandson was about a year and a half old, he used to cry every time he saw me. It broke my heart until I figured out that just about every time he saw me I was either picking him up from his house or he was being dropped off at mine. Once we were away from his parents, we always had fun, but the idea of LEAVING or BEING LEFT was,…[Read more]

Grandmothers: 2 years, 1 month agoBeing a grandmother is way cool. You get to say ”yes” more than you say ”no.” You get to think about all the fun stuff with half the worries. It’s great!
